NLP – Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Sometimes described as the ‘technology of personal achievement’ is a behaviourist approach to therapy and personal change focusing on the way language, brain and behaviour are linked.

In outline:-

NEURO – refers to the way our brains function; the way we ‘code’ experience.

LINGUSITIC – refers to language and how we share our inner world; the way we ‘talk’ about experience

PROGRAMMING – refers to behaviour, generally unconscious behaviour; the way we ‘respond’ to experience

NLP is a ‘technology’ in the sense that it takes a ‘systems’ approach to brain, mind and behaviour. When applied without ‘empathy’ (heart) it can appear to be a cold, function driven approach to coaching, therapy and help. Indeed some of those ‘trained’ in NLP who have undertaken an ‘intensive’ programme of study often lack the sensitivity to apply the NLP technology with any degree of warmth. In their hands it becomes a tricksy-power-kick tool which can be used to influence rather than help others. (see InspireNLP’s blog on this issue)

True the practice of NLP is based around the practitioners ability to ask meaningful questions about a clients behaviour, values and attitudes. This kind of questioning if done without thought can look, sound and feel like an interrogation.

The purpose of the questioning is to create ‘models’ of the behaviour that results from the neuro-logical processing of experience. These ‘models’ (the how and what of behaviour if you like) can then be explored, redefined and shaped to become an improved resource for the individual. Sometimes these ‘models’ can be used to guide and support others.

In terms of Transforming Minds, NLP techniques will be incorporated into some of the sessions so bringing about a more profound change in attitudes, behaviours and personal success.

Alan Jones is Director and Trainer for Inspire NLP so is well qualified to offer NLP therapeutic interventions and workshops as well as training NLP practitioners.
